Temptations (featuring RICK JAMES): Standing On The Top (extended, 9:50!)
Motown (promo) 12" #PR-96, 1982, VG+, $30
The DEFINITIVE "white label" version of this great jam. WAY beyond the simple "lp version" on the Temps' "Reunion" album: you need to hear THIS! Clocking in at almost TEN MINUTES, the Stone City Band rocks out, the Temps are in perfect vocal form each getting a verse, Rick's in there egging on the band and the group with comments and shouts. This is beyond a simple record: it's an EXPERIENCE. There are some slight surface pops at the beginning and at the end, but they're not intrusive. This is the version we heard on late night soul radio stations back then, and never thought we would find. Well, HERE IT IS!

McCoys: Human Ball
Mercury (red label) LP #61207, 1969, stereo, hoc, g, $5
The McCoys go psychedelic! Their 4th album. 9 trax: Human Ball Blues, Only Human, Epilogue, All Over You, Daybreak, It Really Doesn't Matter, Love Don't Stop, Clergy Lies, Stormy Monday Blues. LP has scuffs and some surface scratches but plays clean.
Not your typical McCoys of Hang On Sloopy fame, though the band members may be the same. Nor does the music on Human Ball even hint at what Johnny & Edgar Winter would do with these talents. An all too brief Epilogue is Rick Zehringer at his playful and experimental best, if only for a minute and a half or so. Where Only Human sounds like Crosby, Stills & Nash, the cover of Bob Dylan's All Over You resembles a tribute to Bob album, not a band with a legacy of some Top 40 fame. The music is surprisingly progressive and fun, the confines of Fever stripped away and replaced with creativity. Daybreak is seven minutes plus of Rick Derringer playing jazz with the band sounding like they are in some cabaret playing for the last callers. The album cover is as misleading as the music. A light blue group of seven people with the four members of The McCoys inside a crystal ball staring out from right center give evidence that Human Ball is a musical concept album, dependent on the moods and changes rather than a story told by the lyrics. The lyrics hardly factor in at all. In the middle of Daybreak, Derringer leaves the jazz behind for some inspired Jimi Hendrix wah wah. He's always been a brilliant guitarist, and this excercise shows his dexterity as it crosses genres from jazz to psychedelic to funk to blues. It Really Doesn't Matter goes even further into the experimentation, some Hendrix guitar with Beatles piano, after the seven minute thirty three second Daybreak it clocks in at 5:30. A nice splash of phasing on the voice and what sounds like a Jimmy Page type bow with the guitar makes this one of the more inviting songs, as well as most listenable. The back cover with the band's crystal ball all smashed is a good reflection of the music. Both Love Don't Stop and Clergy Lies continue the pop explorations, a bit of the U.K. band Kaleidoscope can be detected. Rick Derringer's ingenuity is given a full chance to blossom here. The band's backing vocals and heavy organ sound could fit nicely into a Roger Corman Edgar Allan Poe movie. It's that out there.

Tony, Vic & Manuel: Go-Go Watusi b/w La La Cucaracha
Reprise 7" #0288, 1964, vg, dj, $9
60's Los Angeles "latino garage rock". Both sides GREAT!!! Why this has never been comped before, i dunno, but it SHOULD be!
Turtles: You Showed Me b/w Buzzsaw
White Whale 7" #292, 1968, vg+, $20 (n.e.b.)
The two Turtles "breakbeats" on ONE single, back to back! And it's the ORIGINAL single: not a repro! "You Showed Me" (used by De La Soul), and "Buzzsaw" (used as the backing track for D-Nice's "They Call Me D-Nice", produced by Boogie Down Productions). If you plan on using ANY versions of these two songs to sample, you want THIS single, because the versions are LOUDER and HOTTER than the lp versions. Trust me: i compared them, and the versions on this single BLOW AWAY the album versions! Record plays clean with no pops or problems, but i conservatively graded it "VG+" for the light paperscuffs. Previous owner definitely took care of this record!
