Now, Miami took mixing to a whole 'nother level. The first batch (1-5) is our usual overview of the scene. Followed by seven entries (6-12) documenting the scene AS IT HAPPENED on Miami radio, Hot 105. Of particular interest here are the *3 turntable* stylings of DJ Laz(aro) Mendez and Felix Sama. Tapes 9 & 10: essential listening!. Then New York gets its' spin on things Miami-style (13-14). Followed by a chronicle of the first and greatest all-freestyle mix show ever, the Freestyle File, and solo tapes by the two dj's involved in creating the Freestyle File (15-21). Soulful electro bass grooves, perfectly matched beats and phrases and a very below-the-waist approach. Put your legs together if you can't take the seduction.

Quick Notes:
Check out ROOM "A", where you'll find mixA.16: an ALL-freestyle mix by The Latin Rascals.
Check out ROOM "C", where you'll find mixes that are 1-side hiphop, 1-side BASS.

mixH.01) DJ Paradise: Electro Bass Classics
(2cd only, no cassette)

Twenty-Five (!) early 80's classic 12"s, superbly mixed and a real FAVORITE tape here in the AJ lair! This is a great overview of the sounds that created the Miami style of mixing and is consistently one of our most in-demand mixes. Paradise approaches the records with class, flair and a real understanding of blends and meter and when the *right* moment occurs to mate the two, which really "jacks up" the rapture level. Spectacular intro's and cool drop-ins here and there really brighten up the spit 'n' polish that went into this mix. One of his major influences is the Latin Rascals, and it shows in the cuts and edits and blending skills.

12 killer bass, electro, hiphop mixes from white labels, and impossibly rare releases from Super DJ Juanito. Mostly from the bootleg "Funky Mix" label (not to be confused with the "Ultimix" subsidiary, "Funkymix"!), but we kept at it and tracked down some even RARER mixes by him on other one-shot white labels. mixH.05) The Mixx-It Collection
(2cd set)
or 110m. (b) cassette (for only a short while longer: ask first): It'll save you 50%!

Eight meaty LONG minimixes from a long-gone DJ service that always did a good job until greed or maybe just the momentum of a normal business growing prompted them to do way too many releases too often. These are primarily from the earliest releases when the mixes were inspired and really excellent. The original volume number of origin appears after each entry. An encyclopedia of hiphop, bass, freestyle and electro to be found here, tightly controlled and scripted. Just to give you a rough idea: amongst the dozens of artists included here you'll find Cool J, Ready for the World, Run-D.M.C., CCCP a/k/a C.C.C.P. ("American Soviets"), Fresh Celeste (M4sers), Joeski Love, Fat Boys, Newcleus, Nocera, Cover Girls, Salt 'n' Pepa, Sweet Sensation, the System, A Tribe Called Quest, Paris, and many many others. Although Cali-based, the mixing style here is VERY Miami and always appealed to those who prefer a bass/freestyle approach to their mixes. These are not to be overlooked in the history book of mixology.

Mixes include:
> In the Mix '86 (V.1)
> 4/12 Party Mix #1 (V.4)
> 4/12 Party Mix #2 (V.6)
> It's a Rap (V.7)
> 4/12 Party Mix #4 (V.10)
> City Nights Power Mix #4 (V.19)
> Megamix (V.47)
> Supreme Rap Medley (V.39)

mixH.06) Hot 105, Miami Live Mix (2/87)
(1cd set)
or 90m. (b) cassette (for only a short while longer: ask first): It'll save you 50%!

This is the EARLIEST Miami mix we have, and just like the earliest mixes in the Chicago house section (mixD room), it's fascinating to hear the scene coming together. As a result, the jams here are wonderfully eclectic and show a scene in the midst of 'finding itself'. The change-up in styles make for a mix that is never boring, and personally, i prefer these to tapes where all the records are coming from the same 'place', if ya get my drift.

Jams include:
> The Paul Lekakis Boom Boom Megamix, using the following seven records:
> Egyptian Lover: And My Beat Goes Boom (Egyptian Empire 0661-b, 5/84)
> Chaka Khan: I Feel for You (WB)
> Twilight 22: Electric Kingdom (Vanguard)
> Lisa Lisa: Can U Feel the Beat (Col.)

mixH.13) DJ Scott Blackwell (Hot 103, NYC, 6/87)
(1cd set)
or 90m. (b) cassette (for only a short while longer: ask first): It'll save you 50%!

New York City does freestyle! Here's a typically great set from 1987, with a bit of Chicago house tossed in, executed with the level of mixing we're known for. Don't go by just the tracklisting here: Scott PEES all over these records...cutting, scratching, double-beating, phasing...and swirl-mixes it all into the stratosphere! Like nothing you've ever heard! Highly recommended!

November, 2004: newly remastered/expanded. Was 100m. NOW: 150m!

Freestyle and PROGRESSIVE dub-freestyle mixed LIVE at the Tunnel and Emerald City!! A great DJ, live in his element! Sweet!

mixH.15) DJ Paradise & Junebug (freestyle mix, 5/90)
(90m. (a) cassette-only for now, but do-able on cd if you want: just ask)

I can't say enough about what a slice of royalty Paradise is (whaddup, Homes!), just believe me when i say i'm restraining myself by simply highly recommending ANYTHING this guy did. We offer a lot of his mixes because, as we've mentioned already, our stated goal to turn you on to the unknowns that were world-class. Here's one. The a-side is an all Mic-Mac Megamix. The b-side is a Psycho-Bass mix. You know what to do. This ain't no TV ad: this is one SWEATY bandit gettin' DOWN!, and skillz for miles!:

mixH.16) DJ Paradise (Freestyle and Bass, 1/95)
(90m. (a) cassette-only for now, but do-able on cd if you want: just ask)

This one's a tuffie. A superb smoothly blended mix of freestyle hits and the patented Paradise progressive bass 'freebeats' he puts together to bridge sections and pump up the sweat level, but i've never been able to nail him down to supply artist and label info. If you're deep into it, you'll recognize them by title. And I'll be coming back to this selection when i'm not in bang/type/hurricane mode to flesh it out with what i can remember from that period. Meanwhile, feel free to e-me with the missing info. Let's go:

Jams include:

Intro to the next four mixes (#17-20):
The Freestyle File was one of the first all-freestyle mix shows. A number of elements just sort of 'came together' in its' creation, from an Apollo employee (hey, Jay!) who also happened to be the music director at the local college station, to a pair of devoted street dj/customers of my joint: the afore-slobbered-over DJ Paradise and an ex-New Jersey transplant named DJ Hi-Tech. Hi-Tech (Pete) was one of those quiet guys every store loves. He came in every Friday without fail, his $50 a week for records budgeted and in his pocket, and he spent it. Pry him open and you find a guy who LIVES for music, steeped in background knowledge and the history of the music, and just trying to keep up with the sounds of his real home while stuck living away from the action. Paradise and Hi-Tech hit it off, Apollo Records sponsered it, Jay hooked it up at his station, and the show became THE place to be on Sunday afternoons. I went back and painstakingly edited the 24 three-hour blocks into a "best of" series that is the CREAM of one great freestyle mix show. Plus i included one show "as is" just to capture the "live as it happened" mood, warts and all. Hope you'll try them out, and now the original fans of the show (keep it live, Gooey Louie!) can literally "get with the program".
Let's do this!
