mixE.01) DJ's: Frankie Knuckles/ Mickey "Mixin'" Oliver (6/85) + an early '84 mix!
(2cd only, no cassette)
July, 2003: remastered/expanded. Was 80m. Now: 140m!
This tape captured the sophisticated R&B and EuroDance flavors that coalesced into the first batch of house records ever created, some of which appear for the first time anywhere HERE (ie. Jesse Saunders, Fresh, Z-Factor)...history in the making here, folks!...a very cool, very eclectic line-up, eh? Back in the day when a mixshow was a MIX show, not a "genre-specific" showcase! Here, there's HI-NRG, Electro, Italo-Dance, German Electronic, early House, Pop, Miami Dance, classic disco, UK progressive rock/dance, UK soul/funk, even salsa-influenced dance! Note: please remember these are old mixes, VERY old mixes, originally captured on cassette way back when, then transferred to cd 20+ years later, so they're NOT gonna sound like they were made yesterday, ok? Still, very listenable and the mixing is TOO amazing to suppress because it isn't "A+" sound. I give it a "B" and i'm quite grateful i had access to these incredible mix shows!

mixE.05) Mickey "Mixin'" Oliver (Spring, '86)/ WNUR's Quickmix Claude (10/86)
(2cd only, no cassette)
November, 2004: remastered/expanded. Was 90m. Now: 151m.!
Two vintage sets from Mickey "Mixin'" Oliver on WBMX (3/86 & 5/86): nuff said!
And some notes on the relatively unknown (but GREAT!) QuickMix Claude. I particularly like this puppy cuz it was one of the first documented instances where you can hear the house sound coming together. The fall of '86 brought us Chicago mixes that were by then pretty much solid house. Soon after, the trickle of Chicago house became a flood. Don't underestimate Claude if you've never heard of him...he was BAAADDD! Great blends and lotsa quick cutting!
Then there's that bonus set from a totally unknown DJ on WBMX, circa 1986. Absolutely the BEST mix of Carl Bean's "I Was Born This Way" i've ever heard!
As always, if you score this for yourself, i'd appreciate if you could fill in the missing tracklisting info (designated as "???"), as my memory has faded a bit after all these years, concerning some of the trax on this mix.

mixE.10)...no longer exists.
All the material on it has been moved to other mixes here. If you have a GREAT quality "Hot Mix 5" mix from 1985-1987 that isn't simply a rehash of what's already IN this room, and is at least 80m. long, contact me and maybe we can work something out so i can fill the gap here with a "new" E.10!

Man, i just *love* Farley's mixes and it's cool to hear some of the original

a couple of major records ingeniously blended into the mix like chocolate
chips folded into cake batter....mmm, SOMEone's hungry! :-D

mixE.16) DJ's: Bad Boy Bill/ Julien "Jumpin'" Perez (5/90)
(1cd set)
or 90m. (b) cassette (for only a short while longer: ask first): It'll save you 50%!
By 1990, a lot of styles were seeping into the regional purity (odd term,
that, since house was the result of such a melting pot to begin with) of "pure"
Chicago house music and as the mixes AFTER this cutoff point just went all to
"hip-house" hell, I figured this 1990 chapter seemed a good place to end this
room, as far as this gorgeous, warm, always spiritually-uplifting music went.
Now, this tape kicks, mind you, and house thereafter seemed to be re-taken
by New York and New Jersey, who were always whining that it CAME from there
in the first place. No argument from me! But it's hard NOT to love the
truly underground Chicago scene (1985-1990), unfettered by mass media and
the Home-Music-Shopping-Channels. Ever heard a Chicago house song used to sell
Toyota or Wendy's? Not really and not yet, thank God.) But I digress....
Jams include:
- (Julien Perez's set)
- > Mellow Man Ace: Welcome to My Groove
- > White Knight: Clap Your Hands
- > ???: I'll House You (Get It Together) (It's NOT the Jungle Brothers!)
- > Mickey Oliver: In Ten-C-T
- > Madonna: Vogue
- > Tyree: Let the Music Take Control
- > Bomb: Hey You Get Down (a/k/a: "Can yooou diggetttte!")
- > King of Swing: Hip House Goin' Down
- > ???: Do You Want Me Baby?
- > 49ers: Don't You Love Me (UK 4th & Broadway 167, 4/90)
- > Todd Terry: Bango
- > ???: ???
- > Ecstacy: Don't Play Me Raw
- > Mr. Lee: Pump That Body
- > 49ers: Touch Me (4th & Broadway, 12/89)
- > Steve Hurley: Cold World
- > 3B & Brother D: Rock the House

- > Ecstacy: Don't Play Me Raw
- > Mr. Lee: Pump That Body
- > 49ers: Touch Me (4th & Broadway, 12/89)
- > Jamie Principle: Cold World
- > ???: We Like To Party
- > Two in a Room: Do What U Want (Cutting 232, 1/90)
- > Pierre's Fantasy Club: Fantasy Girl (acapella) (S.R.O. #???, '87)
- > KOS: Definition of Love
- > Tyree: ???
- > Ralph Rosario: You Used to Hold Me
- > ---
- > House Crew: ???
- > Rebel MC: ???
- > White Knight: Get Crazy
- > Tony Scott: Get Into It
- > D-Mob: Come on & Get My Love
- > ???: I'll House You (Get It Together)
- > Mellow Man Ace: Welcome to My Groove
- > 49ers: Don't You Love Me (UK 4th & Broadway 167, 4/90)
- > Technotronic: Get Up
- See what i mean? This is a VERY good mix, but the classic period of "house", as we'll always remember it, was obviously over. The music was mutating, and sorry, but to this day, even the thought of "hip-house" and groups like Technotronic...yuk!...but on a more positive tip, I still think that ANYthing that gets a crowd happy and partying is a good thing. And Julien and Bill really work their magic with these records, regardless! If not, this mix wouldn't be here. You guys know how i am....)
Yet another pic of the dj's showcased in this room. Enjoy!
