mixA.01) DJ's: Tony Humphries (12/83) & Red Alert (12/93)

Not only are both sides INCREDIBLE, we purposely juxtaposed an original, VERY early and rare Tony mix (rocking HIP-HOP!) with a mix by Red exactly TEN years later...rocking pretty much the SAME records!!! Simply coincidental and it's fun to compare the different styles over a ten year gap...check this one out!! And if you want more Tony Humphries, see below and also, visit

mixA.02) DJ's: The Latin Rascals (WRKS/NYC, 1/10/85) + ??? (WUSL/Philly '85)
(2cd only, no cassette)

July, 2003: newly remastered/expanded from 1cd to a 2cd set. Was 85m. NOW: 153m!

The Latin Rascals half of this 2cd set is THE MIX that inspired this catalog, created back in 1985. Damn: I've been rockin' these mixes for over 22 years now! Absolutely essential mixing and tape-splicing by the Zen Masters Of The Beat!
The last 3 trax of the Rascals mix here (Hall & Oates to Shannon) duplicate the first 3 trax of Z.09, which CONTINUES this mix for another half-hour fleshing out and completing the mix. So by getting A.02 AND Z.09, you'll have the ONLY 2 hour Latin Rascals mix in existence!
PLUS: i recently unearthed a never-before-offered EXCELLENT Philadelphia-based hiphop/club mix that doesn't credit the DJ but is SMOKIN' HOT, with an eclectic selection similar to what the Rascals were doing, and including actual broadcasted-from-the-gig LIVE selections from the then-current Grandmixer DST/Herbie Hancock, and LL Cool J tours! DST is amazing on the two trax here, see below, and we hear a "freestylin'-goofin' around" side of Cool J as he rocks the mic to WAX some other nameless MC...probably Kool Mo Dee since the two were battling back then.

Jams include:
> (The Latin Rascals disc):
> Paula Anderson: Four Year Battle (Atlantic?, tho i think this was on a smaller label first)
> Dazz Band: Let it All Blow (Motown)
> Strafe: Set It Off (the ULTIMATE mix of "Set It Off", 10 minutes) (Jus' Born 101, 12/84)
> Nuance: Love Ride (Fourth & Broadway)
> Ultimate 3 MC's: What are We Gonna Do About it? (Partytime)
> Doug E. Fresh: The Original Human Beat Box (Vintertainment)
> UTFO: Roxanne Roxanne (Select)
> Capt. Rock: Cosmic Blast (Nia)
> Force MD's: Forgive Me Girl (Tommy Boy)
> Grandmaster Flash: White Lines (Sugar Hill)
> Paul Hardcastle: Rain Forest (Profile)
> Nolan Thomas: Yo Little Brother (Emergency)
> Doug E. Fresh: The Original Human Beat Box (Vintertainment)
> Les Love & The Love Kids: Let's Get It On (Express 2228, /82)
> Force MD's: Forgive Me Girl (Tommy Boy)

Jan, 2005: newly remastered/expanded. Was 69m. NOW: 146m.!

2/85, 5/85, 8/85, 10/85. The best mix-segments from FOUR different early great Red Alert two-table mixathons with some real rarities! Nice loooonnnnggg mixes of each jam for those of you who want a jam IN a mix but hate when there's only a minute or so of the track you wanted! Red *hears* ya, and stretches out, obviously having a lot of fun with each song before moving on to the next one. Nice LONG stretched-out mixes of the jams as Red and Jerry Young shut up and get BUSY, proving yet again what a wonderful DJ Red Alert was back then! His mix of "Basketball", as a perfect example of this, is to DIE for: long, phasing, double-beating, all the "Red Alert" tricks in this splendid mix!

mixA.15) DJ's: Jazzy Jay & Afrika Bambaata, WRKS '83 + DJ: Wolf-D, Buffalo '84
(2cd, 160m., no cassette)

Jan, 2005: newly remastered/expanded. Was 79m. NOW: 160m.!

I can't believe i've been SITTIN' on this stuff for decades, but i've recently unearthed these SUPERB sets by the double-team of Jay and Bam, kickin' it wicked on a weekend night to all of New York City. Filling out the cd is a 23m. set by perhaps the BADDEST local dj from the hometown of Apollo Records (the store), Buffalo's DJ Wolf (aka: Wolf-D). Cocksure, playful and MEAN on the tables, i wish i had HOURS of his stuff, but sadly, it's all lost to history. I don't mean to downplay the importance of adding Bam and Jay to the AJ catalog, but it's a GIVEN that set's gonna get you off. Just trust me when i say: when you hear Wolf, you are gonna shit your pants! Yeah, he shows off a bit, but the guy was a PRO, ghetto style, and never let what he COULD do interfere with keeping a dance floor groove. Did i say i was happy to have ANYTHING by him? That man was cold-blooded: nuff said.

One mix all-freestyle, the other all-deephouse & neo-garage.

Tony Moran and Albert Cabrera got together again during the 90's to throw down on WKTU. Great mixes, great audio quality. A nice footnote to a wonderful duo who changed the world of mixing as we know it. The Joyce Sims opening is to DIE for, and that seamless blend into the Cover Girls! Great to hear that MOST-obscure Dan Hartman 12" b-side dub, too. YOU GO!, guys!

> ???: I'll Be Loving You Forever (???, a neo-freestyle jam Paradise used to rock)
> Stevie B: Party Your Body (LMR 4000, /90?)
> Cynthia: Endless Night (MicMac 510, /89)

mixA.17) DJ: Georgie Boy (Latin Rascals): 80's edit/splice mixes!
(2cd only, 151m.!)

George writes:

"I'm happy to see there are still so many fans of the Latin Rascals (Tony Moran & Albert Cabrera). I have a lot of history with Albert and did mixes with him and for him. I was married to his sister Brunilda and we were all from 102nd Street in Spanish Harlem. Before the Latin Rascals was Albert, Me, Tony, and a guy callled "Fingers". He is the one you hear playing keyboards on a lot of the mixes. I used to help Albert out when The Latin Rascals were working for Arthur Baker, making mixes for 98.7 KISS-FM, and I use to do splicing mixes for him.

"I am the voice on the Latin Rascals 98.7 Kiss Fm mixes (NOTE: see
mixA.02, above!) after the "Say who can it be ..Say What! ...Say who can it be, everybody", then i say: "The Latin Rascals" with the devilish laugh. That is the same voice and laugh I do on MY mixes, as well."

"Shep Pettibone was the reason i started mixing in the late 70's and 80's. I went under the name "Georgie-Boy" and did mixes for WKTU (103.5, NYC) and stations in Boston. A lot of music lovers have no idea what the splicing and editing thing was all about. I remember sitting in my room with my huge reel to reel laying flat on a table and me splicing and splicing for hours. Many people don't know that a 5 minute splice mix could literally take hours by the time you find the mark, mark up the spot, then you have to splice it with a razor blade and tape each piece to each other. I would walk out of the room with neck pains and upper back pains. I hated mixing one turntable to another turnatable, I just found that too boring and it is something that another dj could do as well. Splicing and cutting takes a lot of work and it is guaranteed to separate you from your regular average dj. I thank you for taking time out to listen to my mixes!"

This tracklisting only scratches the surface of all the jams swooping in and out of this SUPERB mix. If you dig the Latin Rascals, you're gonna LOVE this. Enjoy!
